Mill Street Bridge Information:

We have obtained estimates for engineering and permitting for construction of a new bridge/structure which are estimated at between $140,000.00 to $155,000.00.  Construction for the new unit will be at an additional $275,000.00 to $325,000.00.  The total projected cost for the project is between $415,000.00 to $480,000.00.

The DPW Department has an annual road budget of $168,000.00 a year, minus $35,000.00 for storm water management, leaving approximately $133,000.00.  Obviously the repair of the Mill Street Bridge structure is far beyond the scope of our current annual budget.  That being said, the Department is actively searching every state agency as well as federal programs for assistance in this repair.  To date we have applied for four different grants with little or no success, however we are currently participating in another round of grants which appear to have some promise.

However Merrimac fares with regard to future grants, it should be understood that even if we are chosen as a recipient, commencement of the permitting, engineering, review and bidding process is at least two years away.       In the meantime we understand that the residents of Mill Street will bear additional traffic from town employees and vendors entering one of the three town sites located on Mill and Federal Way.  We are hopeful that if sufficient funding is available the road will undergo upgrades this summer in order to ensure that vehicles pass as quietly as possible; also a sign will be installed to alert motorists that this is not a through way, and open to residents only.

Attention Drain Layers: Permits expire on December 31st of each year, if you have not applied to renew for 2017 please see the Drain Layer Renewal Process and submit documents as soon as possible.
